In Nakchu Prefecture lending has been provided to groups of 15-30 families, often representing whole villages, with a manager, accountant and book-keeper responsible for project implementation. Loans have averaged 10,000-40,000 RMB ($1,200-$5,000), and are repayable in four six-monthly installments over two years. Nomad families primarily requested loans for the purchase of fencing needed for the establishment of village feedlots. These fences can hold and feed livestock prior to sale each Fall. Nomad families have also given priority to small tractors with trailers to help with the marketing of their livestock, yogurt production, barley milling equipment and village stores. |
