In mid 2005, TPAF launched a new project intended to provide about 16,750 villagers in 45 villages of Lhoka and Nakchu Prefectures with information on improved health, nutrition and hygiene practices. The training covered such topics as improved maternal and child health care, the dangers of smoking, protection from such infectious diseases as TB and HIV/AIDS, prevention of iodine deficiency disorders such as goiter and mental retardation, the use of latrines, proper disposal of household and village garbage and regular consumption of nutritious vegetables. Village and Township leaders were trained to provide villagers with information on improved behavior practices using audio visual training materials and participatory training techniques that would help to ensure maximum understanding and absorption. At the end of the training, villagers were encouraged to discuss the information and to decide on the improved behavior practices they would introduce at the personal, family and community levels. Some continuing assistance was provided to villagers to help with the introduction of the improved behavior practices. In 2006 the program was expanded to include an additional 4,500 families from 21 villages in Samye Township of Lhoka Prefecture. In 2007 the program was further extended to include all villagers of four townships in Namling County and all villagers in Rong Township in Lhoka Prefecture. TPAF is also currently discussing assistance to the Health Bureau of Namling County designed to help it to further extend the villager health behavior change program to other Namling County townships with its own resources.
