TPAF is currently working closely with the Nakchu Prefecture Government and its Poverty Alleviation Office in efforts to support nomad yak milk cooperatives and the development of township dairy facilities producing yogurt for urban markets. An initial pilot program is being established in villages of Tsering Township of Amdo County. Attention is being given to improved feed and micronutrients for lactating female “dri” yaks, including the establishment of fenced feedlots that can help to give female yaks better feed and milking capacity in summer and fall months. A small dairy has been established with a capacity to produce and market yogurt and cheese products in the Nakchu and Lhasa Municipality markets. It is envisaged that the milk cooperative promotion and dairy development model will be replicated in villages of Nyima Township in Nyerong County in 2008.
